What You Need To Know
Learn how custom molded orthotics work and how they differ from retail inserts.
Understanding Custom Molded Orthotics
Custom-fitted orthotics are prescribed by a foot doctor and are designed to support and comfort your feet. Orthotics are manufactured after a thorough exam of your feet, ankles and legs, so these inserts fit your unique foot structure and needs. At Foot and Ankle Specialists, custom-made shoe inserts are prescribed to relieve foot or ankle pain and restore normal foot function.
Orthotics are similar to eyeglasses in that they provide stabilization to relieve the pain that comes with strain and they restore proper function of the foot to make it more mechanically efficient. Even people with minimal foot discomfort and no significant deformity can find relief in custom orthotics. They are effective in treating plantar fasciitis, bursitis, tendonitis and heel, foot and ankle pain.
Shoe inserts found in retail stores are one-size-fits-all. Custom orthotics, however, are molded to fit your foot and made of high-quality materials that are durable for years with proper care. During activity, your arch goes up and down to absorb shock. As we age the arch, due to genetics and wear and tear, begins to collapse, and pain and disability can result.
We will first assess your overall health and evaluate your pain or discomfort along with contributing factors. After a thorough examination of your feet, we will check your gait and watch the movement of your feet, ankles and legs to determine the most effective type of orthotic for your condition.
Types of Orthotics and What to Expect
There are two broad categories of orthotics. Functional orthotics help control abnormal motion and the pain associated with it. They are usually made of a semi-rigid material like graphite or plastic. Accommodative orthotics provide cushioning and support and can help treat diabetic foot ulcers and painful calluses.
Accommodating orthotics are among the most traditional. They use padding to protect and support the foot to accommodate or offload a specific area and relieve pressure. Functional orthotics use biomechanical applications and posting to influence the motion of the foot and alter the forces acting on it, making the foot work better and pain free.
When a blend of both is necessary, podiatrists turn to functional-hybrid orthotics. These have the best of both types built in, with an accommodating, shock-absorbing top cover and a stabilizing shell for correction. They can be prescribed for prolonged standing at work or for playing sports.
All of our orthotics are made from electronically scanned images or physical impressions of your foot to ensure accuracy. Most insurance companies cover the cost of orthotics, and our team will obtain authorization and help with claims. Upon receiving your orthotics, your doctor will provide wearing instructions and schedule a follow-up to evaluate your progress, with any adjustments often made in the office while you wait.
