What You Need to Know
Understanding plantar warts, why they hurt, and when to see a podiatrist.
Plantar Warts: Causes, Symptoms, and Care
A wart is an infection caused by a virus, which can invade your skin through small cuts or breaks. Over time, the wart develops into a hard, rough growth on the surface of the skin. When warts appear on the bottom of the foot, they are called plantar warts because they occur on the sole of your foot. “Plantar” means “of the sole” in Latin.
Unlike other types of warts, plantar warts are typically quite painful, as the pressure from walking and standing forces them to grow inward into the tissue of your foot. Sometimes they are covered by a callus on the surface of the skin. Underneath, the wart can have finger-like roots that reach down and grow, making them very difficult to treat from the surface.
Plantar warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which enters the body through a break in the skin. The virus is very contagious and can be picked up in public areas such as swimming pools, showers, and locker rooms. Children, teens, and people with weakened immune systems are more vulnerable.
Common signs include a rough, grainy growth on the bottom of the foot, black pinpoints on the surface, and pain or tenderness when walking or standing. You may also feel “painful pebbles” in your shoes. If a lesion is painful, bleeding, or changing color, or if home treatments have not worked, it is time to see your podiatrist for an accurate evaluation and the right care plan.
Treatment Options and Prevention
There are many ways to treat warts, depending on their size and location. Medication or surgical removal, or both, may be effective. Freezing or burning may also be used. Even after warts are removed, they can recur, which is why choosing the right approach matters.
Swift is a technology that has proven highly effective in the removal of plantar warts. It delivers low dose microwave energy through a specialized probe that targets the underlying HPV virus by stimulating a natural immune response. We like to say we are addressing the root cause, not the symptom. The protocol involves 3 to 4 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart. Each treatment lasts only 5 to 10 minutes, with no breaking of the skin and no bandages. Patients can resume daily activities immediately.
Other options include medication, where the wart is broken down with an acidic or blister-forming medication over several weeks; curettage, where the wart is removed with a small, spoon-shaped instrument under local anesthetic; and laser, where the wart is vaporized using focused light energy.
After treatment, protect your feet from future infection:
– Always cover feet with shower shoes or flip-flops in public areas. – Keep your feet clean and dry. – Change socks and shoes daily. – Do not touch any warts you have, as they can spread.
If you are considering over-the-counter medications, ask your podiatrist first, especially if you have diabetes or poor circulation. Book an appointment and we will help you find the right treatment path.
